U.S. sweeps 10 gold medals in men’s freestyle at Pan American Schoolboy Championships in Chile

The U.S. Schoolboy Pan American team, which swept the 10 men’s freestyle gold medals, pose together after winning the team title in freestyle.

SANTIAGO, Chile – It was a perfect day for Team USA, which went undefeated in the men’s freestyle competition and swept all 10 gold medals the Pan American Schoolboy Championships on Saturday. Team USA took first place with the maximum 100 points scored.

The Outstanding Wrestler award in Schoolboy freestyle went to USA team member Vance VomBaur (53kg, Greeley , Colo).

The US was dominant over the course of the three day tournament. Altogether there were 27 weights contested across the Schoolboy and Schoolgirl divisions in freestyle and Greco - the US team won gold or silver in every weight, with 23 golds and 4 silvers.

Coach Chris Owens from Idaho expressed his gratitude in working with the boys and the delegation.

“It's been a rewarding experience to work with such a talented group of wrestlers. They will take a tremendous amount of experience with them from this trip that will go far as they compete at the cadet and junior levels. I've also greatly enjoyed working with coach Braumon Creighton, trainer Jon Duplessis and the parents who made the trip to Chile. The whole delegation gelled together to achieve these outstanding results,” said Owens.

"It's been a pleasure and honor working with such a great group of athletes," said Coach Braumon Creighton of California. "I've enjoyed working with each of the boys and look forward to seeing their progress in the future. Traveling and coaching with Coach Owens and Trainer Jon Duplessis has been a blast, and all the parents have been incredibly helpful and supportive."

The coaches also expressed thanks for USA Referee Roy Scott's leadership and hard work all three days of competition. Roy was named outstanding referee for the tournament.

The boys collectively said it was great to hear the National Anthem play 10 times and they hope their performance motivates the US Senior Teams as they compete this week in Paris - Go Team USA!

All of the boys who wrestled in freestyle on Saturday also competed in Greco-Roman on Thursday. Seven of them are coming back from Santiago as double champions, winning both the freestyle and Greco-Roman golds: Kolby Warren of Missouri at 32 kg, Dylan Gilcher of Michigan at 35 kg, Gabriel Taboa of Idaho at 42 kg, Ryder Rogotzke of Minnesota at 47 kg, Robert Perez of California at 66 kg, Quentin Saunders of Kansas at 73 kg and Noah Pettigrew of Georgia at 85 kg.
