UPDATE: Ten Americans place at SFU Clansman International

Seven women and three men from the United States medaled, including five golds, at the SFU Clansman International on Saturday in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

Producing championship performances were Dominique Parrish at 55 kg/121 lbs., Marizza Birrueta at 58 kg/127.6 lbs., Fran Giorgio at 60 kg/132 lbs., Easton Hargrave at 86 kg/189 lbs. and Bobby Telford at 125 kg/275 lbs.

Former U.S. Junior World Team member Birrueta, a Washington native, competed for Grays Harbor College and notched three solid wins at the weight. In the finals, she defeated Cholena Horne of Canada Golden Bears, 6-3.

A pair of Americans competing for host Simon Fraser added gold medals, California native Parrish and Pennsylvania native Giorgio.

On the men’s side Hargrave, also of Grays Harbor, earned three pins in his four matches, including a 22-second fall over Grayson St. Laurent in the finals to take the gold at 86 kg.

Three-time NCAA All-American for Iowa Telford won the heavyweight title, competing for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club. He outscored his opponents, 30-1, en route to the championship.

The U.S. earned three runner-up finishes, two for women and one for men.

Another Grays Harbor wrestler Chloe Spencer wrestled in a round robin at 60 kg/132 lbs., where she went 3-1 on the day. She fell in the third round to Fran Gorgio of Simon Fraser University, the eventual champion.

Mallory Velte, who finished fifth at the 2015 UWW Junior World Championships, took silver at 63 kg/138.5 lbs., competing for SFU. She dropped a 5-0 match to Braxton Papodouplis of Team Impact in the finals.

At 65 kg/143 lbs., Nick Dardanes represented Hawkeye Wrestling Club and finished second. Dardanes opened his tournament with a 10-0 technical fall and a first-period pin to earn a spot in the finals. He faced Dhillon Williams of Team Impact in the finals but fell in a 10-0 tech fall.

Jennifer Anderson of SFU, a native of Washington, won a bronze medal at 58 kg. Delilah Houck of Warner Pacific College rounded out the Americans’ impressive showing with a third-place finish at 55 kg/121 lbs.
