ESPN2 to air two shows from World Wrestling Championships

ESPN2 will air two prime-time telecasts from the World Wrestling Championships, which will be held in Las Vegas, Nev. at the Orleans Arena. Both of these tape-delayed shows will be two hours long.

Over 100 nations expected to compete at the World Wrestling Championships in the three Olympic wrestling styles of Greco-Roman, women’s freestyle and men’s freestyle. The United States will have a strong team in all three styles.

In addition to the two ESPN2 telecasts, there will be live bronze and gold medal matches and awards coverage of the World Wrestling Championships on ESPN3 all six days of the event, Sept. 7-12. ESPN3 coverage will consist of the live feed provided by United World Wrestling, the international wrestling federation.  Live access to ESPN2 and ESPN3 across digital platforms will be available via WatchESPN on computers, smartphones, tablets and connected devices to fans nationwide through an affiliated provider.  The schedule:

The first ESPN2 show will be telecast on Thursday, September 10 from 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. It will cover highlights from the first three days of the World Championships, which features Greco-Roman wrestling and women’s freestyle wrestling.

American wrestling stars who are scheduled to compete in the first three days include 2012 World champion and four-time World medalist Elena Pirozhkova at 69 kg in women’s freestyle, two-time World bronze medalist Justin “Harry” Lester at 71 kg in Greco-Roman, two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe at 48 kg in women’s freestyle and 2014 World bronze medalist Andy Bisek at 75 kg in Greco-Roman.

The second ESPN2 show will be telecast on Sunday, September 13 from 8:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. Eastern Time. It will cover highlights from the final three days of the World Championships, which features men’s freestyle wrestling and women’s freestyle wrestling.

American wrestling stars who are scheduled to compete in the final three days include 2012 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg in men’s freestyle, two-time World champion and four-time World medalist Adeline Gray at 75 kg in women’s freestyle, 2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert at 86 kg in men’s freestyle, two-time World medalist Helen Maroulis at 55 kg in women’s freestyle and 2013 Junior World champion Kyle Snyder at 97 kg in men’s freestyle.

The announcing team will include veteran wrestling play-by-play announcer Jason Knapp, and 2000 Olympic champion Rulon Gardner, who will handle the color commentary.

This is the first World Championships hosted in the United States since 2003, and the first time a World Championship featuring all three Olympic styles will be hosted on American soil. The 2015 World Wrestling Championships serves as the first and most important qualifying event for the 2016 Olympic Games, with 108 berths in the 2016 Olympics up for grabs.
