FARGO, N.D. – The man with the Twitter handle – @WhoIsJamesG – is starting to make a name for himself on the Senior level.

James Green swept two straight matches from 2014 World Team member Nick Marable, 4-0 and 2-1, to win a Special Wrestle-Off on Saturday at the Fargo Dome and earn the final spot on the U.S. World Team.

Green (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC) now advances to September’s World Championships in Las Vegas. Green was a four-time All-American for Nebraska and a 2014 University World silver medalist in freestyle.

“This is awesome – it feels good," Green said. "I wanted to prove a point and prove I’m the best guy at the weight. I’m looking forward to wrestling for Team USA at the World Championships and wrestling in my home country."

Green won the first match 4-0, scoring a pushout in the first period and earning a passivity point in the second. Green then shot in for a double-leg takedown with 14 seconds left to seal the freestyle win at 70 kg/154 lbs.

In the second bout, Marable shot in on a leg attack and was behind Green in position to score a first-period takedown. But Green stepped over a Marable gut wrench attempt from the tripod position to score a takedown.

Marable scored on a passivity point, but Green held him off to earn the 2-1 win to make the World Team.

Green clapped his hands three times and raised his arms in celebration of the win.

“I’ve worked really hard on my par terre and defending against that gut wrench,” Green said. “I’m great in that tripod and I have good hips. I knew once he tried to turn me, I would be able to step over him.”

Marable (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) placed eighth at the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Marable beat Green to make the 2014 World Team in the same venue here in Fargo.

“I just made little mistakes," Marable said. “In the first match, I hadn’t competed in a while and I was a little rusty. In the second match, I made a big mistake. I tried to force a turn that I knew he was going to try to step over. I felt rushed because I felt like they were about to call us back up. I tried to force it and it cost me the match.”

Marable said he plans to move back up to 74 kg/163 lbs. during the 2016 Olympic year. His weight class of 70 kilos is a non-Olympic weight class.

“I’m definitely going to go up a weight to 74 kilos,” he said. “I’m going to try to make the Olympic Team. It will be a little bit easier to make 74. If I train the right way and do the right things with Coach (Sammie) Henson and Sunkist, I will be fine.”

Based upon the 2015 World Team Trials Procedures, Marable, as the U.S. Open champion at 70 kg, earned an automatic berth into the Final Wrestle-off of June’s U.S. World Team Trials in Madison, Wisconsin. However, Marable did not attend weigh-ins for the 70 kg weight class on June 12 due to reported injury and, pursuant to the 2015 World Team Trials Procedures, Marable made the request for delay of the Final Wrestle-off within 18 hours of the weigh-in.

An independent arbitrator decided that a World Team Trials best-of-3 finals series would be held between Marable and Green.

“I just tried to keep a level head through the whole process,” Green said. “I’ve been ready to wrestle again since the Trials. I kept my focus on what I want to do and that’s win a World championship. I’m ready. I just have to keep learning and keep progressing.”
