Three U.S. women go for Klippan bronze; Spencer gets Cadet silver

KLIPPAN, Sweden – A large team of U.S. women freestyle wrestlers, including Senior and Cadet level athletes, competed at the respected Klippan Lady Open on Saturday.

The Senior division has a two-day format, and the gold-medal finalists were determined. Team USA did not qualify any athletes for the finals.

Three U.S. women reached the semifinals, where they lost and will compete in bronze-medal bouts on Sunday, Katherine Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 53 kg/114.5 lbs., Becca Leathers (Choctaw, Okla). at 55 kg/121 lbs and Brittney Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 75 kg/165 lbs. Their opponents will be determined in repechage rounds on Sunday morning.

Fulp-Allen defeated opponents from Japan and Colombia, before losing in the semifinals to Mayu Mukaida of Japan, 1-9.

Leathers had wins over Sweden and Italy, before losing to Veronkia Chumikova of Russia in the semifinals, 0-11.

Roberts opened with wins over athletes from Sweden and Azerbaijan, before losing to Canadian star Erica Wiebe, 0-7.

Three other U.S. women are still competing in the repechage, after losing to an eventual finalist: Erin Golston (Lake in the Hills, Ill./NYAC/USOEC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Koral Sugiyama (Pocatello, Idaho) at 58 kg/128 lbs.

The Cadet division was completed on Saturday, and the U.S. had a number of entries. Winning the only medal for the U.S. delegation was Kenya Spencer of Caro, Mich, who won a silver medal at 70 kg/154 lbs.

Spencer went 1-1 in her pool, but advance to the finals through a tiebreaker. She pinned Steffi Blohm of Germany, giving her more classification points than her two opponents. In the finals, she was pinned by Mei Shindo of Japan.

Five U.S. Cadet women placed in the top six of their divisions.
