HAVANA, Cuba – Four U.S. wrestlers, three women’s freestyle athletes and one Greco-Roman athlete, won gold medals in an international tournament in Cuba on Thursday.

The women wrestlers competed in the Cerro Pelado Tournament, and the U.S. champions were:
• Victoria Anthony, Huntington Beach, Calif. (Titan Mercury WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs
• Helen Maroulis, Rockville, Md. (Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs
• Elena Pirozhkova, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Titan Mercury WC) at 69 kg/152 lbs.

The Greco-Roman tournament is called the Granma Cup, and winning the title at 75 kg/165 lbs. was Andy Bisek, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Minnesota Storm).

All four wrestlers won gold medals in this event for the second straight year. Pirozhkova is a four-time World medalist, Maroulis a two-time World medalist and Bisek a one-time World medalist. Anthony was fifth in the 2013 Worlds.

Bisek opened with a 1-1 win over Cuban star Batista in his first match. In the semifinals, he defeated Arieal Fis of Cuba, 5-2. In the finals, he won by injury default over another Cuban athlete.

Anthony won four times by fall, including a big pin over two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in the semifinals. She pinned Mallaqui of Peru in the finals.

Maroulis won four matches in a five-athlete roundrobin, all by 10-0 technical falls.

Pirozhkova scored a pair of 10-0 technical falls, including a technical fall in her final bout against World champion Aline Focken of Germany.

Winning bronze medals were at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. in women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestler Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets) at 75 kg/165 lbs.

Speiller opened with a pin in the quarterfinals, then lost to a Cuban in the semifinals, 0-4. He won a 14-4 technical fall over an athlete from Peru in the bronze-medal bout.

Cuba won seven of the eight gold medals, with Bisek winning the only title by a non-Cuban in the Greco-Roman division.
