Jake Varner, shown competing on way to 2012 Olympic gold medal, will compete at the World Championships at 96 kg in men’s freestyle.

The U.S. World Wrestling Teams in the three Olympic styles are completing their domestic training in preparation for the 2014 World Wrestling Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Sept. 8-14.

The U.S. teams in men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman were at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in August, as part of a summer of preparation for the World Championships. The men’s freestyle team also did a training cycle in Tempe, Ariz. In the coming days, the Greco-Roman team will travel to Kazakhstan for pre-World training, while the men’s and women’s freestyle teams will head to Ostia, Italy.

At the World Championships, the freestyle competition will be held first, from Sept. 8-9. National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett leads the coaching staff which has prepared the U.S. athletes for competition.

The U.S. men’s freestyle team is led by 2012 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2012 Olympic champion and 2011 World bronze medalist Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 97 kg/213 lbs.

2009 World bronze medalist and 2012 Olympian Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) is entered at 125 kg/275 lbs., while three-time U.S. World Team member Brent Metcalf, Iowa City, Iowa (NYAC) is set to wrestle at 65 kg/143 lbs.

Four U.S. freestyle team members enter their first Senior World Championships: Tony Ramos (Iowa City, Iowa (Titan Mercury WC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs., Jimmy Kennedy (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC) at 61 kg/134 lbs., Nick Marable (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) at 70 kg/154 lbs. and Ed Ruth (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 86 kg/189 lbs.

“It is just about show time. Our guys are doing really well, from top to bottom, from Tony to Tervel. They have done a good job working in some weak areas and they have gotten better in them. This group is extremely hard working individuals. I really feel good about where they are in their training,” said National Freestyle Coach Bruce Burnett.

Next up is women’s freestyle wrestling on Sept. 10-12. National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner leads the coaching staff which has prepared the U.S. athletes for competition.

A pair of 2012 World champions headline the U.S. team: Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 75 kg/165 lbs. Both athletes have won three World medals. Pirozhkova also boasts a 2010 World silver medal and a 2013 World bronze medal. Gray won World bronze medals in 2011 and 2013. Pirozhkova was a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team.

Competing in her first Senior World Championships is 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Randi Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) at 69 kg /152 lbs.

Two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) wrestles at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., while 2012 World silver medalist Helen Maroulis (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) is at 55 kg/121 lbs.

Two team members are competing in their second Senior World Championships, Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. and Alli Ragan (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) at 58 kg/128 lbs. Conder is a past Junior World champion, while Ragan won two Junior World bronze medals.

The only U.S. women’s team member in her first World Championships is Jenna Burkert (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 60 kg/132 lbs.

“The camps have been great. The energy and intensity have been very good. We have been able to hit some areas we needed to work on with each athlete and with the team. I feel good at this point. Their preparation has been very good,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.

Finishing up the tournament will be Greco-Roman from Sept. 12-14. National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland leads the coaching staff which has prepared the U.S. athletes for competition.

Two-time World bronze medalist and 2012 Olympian Justin Lester (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) leads the team at 71 kg/156.5 lbs. Lester is on his sixth World Team. He is joined by two-time Olympian and five-time World team member Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 59 kg/130 lbs. Mango was fifth at the 2013 World Championships.

“I love this team. We have a great group of guys. This team has a lot of potential. We have some talented veterans and I am excited about the young guys on the team, as well. Let’s get them out there to compete and see where they are at. It has been a great camp. The goal is to come out of it better than when you came into it. Everybody is healthy and feeling good,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.

At the 2013 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, the U.S. women’s team placed third, the U.S. men’s freestyle team placed fifth and the U.S. Greco-Roman team placed ninth.
