For the first time since 1999, USA Wrestling will be not be hosting all three of the Olympic styles together at the World Team Trials this year.

A decision was made to separate the men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman World Team Trials events on different weekends in 2014. The reason for the change was to allow for the possibility that there may be some wrestlers who would like to try out for the World Championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.

The Phase 1 World Team Trials for men’s and women’s freestyle will be held in Madison, Wis., May 31-June 1. The Phase 1 World Team Trials for Greco-Roman will be held in Daytona Beach, Fla., June 13.

“We were looking to provide an opportunity to a few freestyle guys who had an interest in Greco-Roman and would consider going to the Greco-Roman Trials if the calendar allowed them to do so. For this reason, the Greco trials will be held in conjunction with the Cadet National Duals in Florida, which will take place two weeks after the Freestyle Trials in Madison, Wis.,” said USA Wrestling High Performance Manager Cody Bickley.

There have been a number of great American international wrestlers who have wrestled in both styles on the Senior level. For example, in 1984, when Steve Fraser won the gold medal at the Olympics in Greco-Roman, he had also won the national title on the Senior level in freestyle. Sammie Henson won a U.S. Greco-Roman title before he switched to freestyle and went on to win a World gold medal and Olympic silver medal. The decision to split the World Team Trials again will allow today’s generation of Senior wrestlers an option to pursue both opportunities.

The changes in the weight classes in international wrestling this year has also affected the structure of the World Team Trials events. Starting in 2014, the number of weight classes at the World Championships increased from seven to eight in all three styles. However, for the Olympic Games, each style will have six Olympic weight classes. For the first time ever, there will be six Olympic weights and two non-Olympic weights for men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s wrestling.

With this in mind, the Phase 1 World Team Trials in 2014 will feature the six Olympic weight classes in each style. Once the U.S. team is determined at those 18 weights, there will be a special Phase 2 Non-Olympic World Team Trials in the six non-Olympic weight classes during the Cadet and Junior National this summer in Fargo, ND. This is how the U.S. Women’s World Team has been set the last few years, with the Olympic weight classes established first, then a second event for the non-Olympic weights. This allows the USA to field its strongest World Teams.

“We’re very excited about holding the Phase 2 World Team Trials in each style at the Cadet and Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND. This is one of the largest wrestling events in the world and a unique opportunity. The athletes in the Trials will be wrestling in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. At the same time, our Cadets and Juniors will be exposed to some great wrestling!” said USA Wrestling Associate Executive Director for Programs and Strategy Les Gutches.

“When taking into consideration that most athletes will gravitate towards the six Olympic weights in each style, once again it was about opportunity and the ability for athletes to adjust their weight in a reasonable timeframe in order to challenge at a non-Olympic weight. The women’s program has had some great success with this in recent years and we felt it was an opportune time to try it with the men. At the end of this process, it is our hope that we will have our best 24 athletes representing the United States at the 2014 World Championships,” said Bickley.

Therefore, the 2014 Phase 1 U.S. World Team Trials in men’s and women’s freestyle will be held at the Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis., May 31-June 1. Each day, there will be six weight classes contested.

On Saturday, May 31, men’s freestyle action will be held at 57 kg, 97 kg and 125 kg, while women’s action will be at 48 kg, 58 kg, and 69 kg. On Sunday, June 1, the men’s freestyle classes are 65 kg, 74 kg and 86 kg, while the women will compete at 53 kg, 63 kg and 75 kg.

As in the past, a Trials Tournament will be held in the morning session, which will determine the two finalists in each weight class. The evening session will feature a best-of-three series to determine the U.S. World Team member in a final wrestle-off.

In addition, on Friday, May 30, the FILA Junior World Team Trials for men in both freestyle and Greco-Roman will also be held in Madison, Wis. at the Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster at There will only be 909 reserved seats available at the U.S. World Team Trials. The rest of the tickets for sale will be general admission seats. Fans are encouraged to secure their reserved tickets now in order to guarantee the best seat locations.

The Phase 1 U.S. Greco-Roman World Team Trials will be held two weeks later, at the Ocean Center - Exhibit Hall in Daytona Beach, Fla. on Friday, June 13. The competition will be held alongside another major USA Wrestling age-group event, the Cadet National Duals.

The Greco-Roman World Team Trials will be held in one day, with the six Olympic weight classes being contested: 59 kg, 66 kg, 75 kg, 85 kg, 98 kg and 130 kg. A Trials Tournament will be held, which will set the finalists at each weight class. A best-of-three series final wrestle-off will determine the athlete in each weight class who will earn a spot at the World Championships.

The Phase 2 Greco-Roman World Team Trials for the non-Olympic weights will be held during the Cadet and Junior Nationals in Fargo, ND. Check for details.

The 2014 World Championships are set for Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Sept. 8-14.

“We are excited to introduce a few changes in regards to the 2014 World Team Trials process. These changes have been vetted among coaches across the country, each of the respective sport committees, as well as final approval by USA Wrestling’s Executive Committee. This will be our first Trials process since the new weight classes were released by FILA. We look forward to the Trials this year and anticipate a few new faces because of the change in weight classes as well as the trials process itself.” said Bickley.
