USA Wrestling has announced that Sombo has been added as a style at the 2007 U.S. National Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., April 6-7.

There will be a Senior division for both men and women at the 2007 U.S. National Sombo Championships/World Team Trials, which will held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

This tournament will not only determine the national champions and All-Americans in Sombo for the year, but will also serve as the qualifying event for the 2007 U.S. World Sombo team which will compete at the Sombo World Championships in Antalya, Turkey, Sept. 7-9.

FILA, the international federation, reinstated Sombo as a form of international wrestling in 2005. Sombo is a style of jacket wrestling with submission holds originally developed in the former Soviet Union as a form of unarmed self-defense.

Weigh-ins for the Sombo competition will be held on Friday, April 6, with the competition set for Saturday, April 7. Specific details about the weigh-in times and procedures, as well as the exact competition schedule, will be announced when available.

In 2006, USA Wrestling hosted the U.S. National Sombo Championships in North Palm Beach, Fla.

The United States placed second in the men's division and third in the women's division at the 2006 World Sombo Championships in Antalya, Turkey. The U.S. won a total of eight medals (seven for men and one for women), including a gold medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. from Jeff Zastrow (Whitewater, Wis./Warhawk WC).
