Copper Certification


Purpose:
This certification is a basic introduction to the principles of coaching and wrestling technique. This certification is required to coach at some levels of USA Wrestling events.  Please check tournament info for minimum certifications as they may vary from event to event.  Event schedules are available by visiting: http://usawevents.sportngin.com/

Audience:
Coaches, parents and volunteers with focus on coaching younger age groups (athlete ages 0-12).

Prerequisites: 
Participants must be a current member of USA Wrestling and must have a successful background check completed before attending the clinic.  Please allow 7-10 days for background checks to be completed before attending a certification course.

Curriculum:
Copper Certifications consist of a 4 hour classroom (or online) clinic with testing. The Rookie Coaches Wrestling Guide (2nd Ed) will be used as the course manual. Participants will complete a test and return it to USA Wrestling for grading and processing (info below).

Copper Clinic Instructors:
USAW club leaders, current coach members or administrators can facilitate this clinic level. 


To apply to host a USAW Copper Clinic, please gain approval from your state leader and contact the NCEP Manager at USA Wrestling (MClayton@USAWrestling.org). Please note that State Chairpersons will be notified of all clinics within their state.

Test Scoring:
Test results must be submitted either by the course instructors or by individual participants.  These forms can be submitted in one of three ways:


            1. Faxed to the USAW National Office at 719.598.9440 (Attn: NCEP Testing   
               Center)
            2. By email to: NCEP Manager at XRECP@USAWrestling.org

            3. By mail to: USA Wrestling, NCEP Testing Center, 6155 Lehman Drive,
               Colorado Springs, CO 80918. 

Awards and Continuing Education Credits:
Participants scoring at or above an 80% will be Copper Certified Coaches in the National Coaches Education Program and will receive their Copper Certificate and Copper Coaches Card by mail, please allow 3-4 weeks for processing and delivery of these awards. Certifications can be printed directly off the USAW membership site at: https://www.usawmembership.com

The Copper Certification contains 12 contact hours (4 hour in person or online instruction including testing and 6 hours recommended reading in the course text). 10 contact hours equates to 1 Continuing Education Unit credits.

1. Ensure you’ve completed your 2017-18 coach membership annual renewal (this year it requires SafeSport certification (free), back ground check ($15 and is good for two membership years) and annual coach membership fee (fee varies by state).
2. In your membership profile, select “Add online copper course to cart.”
3. Check out and pay for the course.
4. The course link will be delivered within one hour to the email address on your membership profile (please ensure your email address is correct).
5. You’ll have 21 days to complete the course.
6. We add the certification to your profile in 2-3 business days of completion. Cards are sent 6-8 weeks after completion.
7. If you need proof of your certification sooner than the 6-8 week window (but after the 2-3 day window for processing), you can click “Print Card” at the bottom of your membership page and it will print your membership card and certification.
8. If you need proof of certification in less than the 2-3 day window, take the automated email you will receive at the end of the course to the tournament director along with your current membership card and photo ID for proof.
