Nick Gwiazdowski (Raleigh, N.C./Titan Mercury WC) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Sept. 1, 2020.
Gwiazdowski, a two-time Senior World bronze medalist at 125 kg, competed at the first Wrestling Underground event, which was put on by UFC Fight Pass.
The event featured six Senior-level matches being held inside an octagon at an undisclosed location in the Pacific Northwest. With the exception of a lack of step-out points, the event followed United World Wrestling’s ruleset.
As the card’s main event, Gwiazdowski faced multiple-time National Team member at 97 kg Kyven Gadson.
Gwiazdowski was dominant in his performance, registering a first-period technical fall. In the first period, Gwiz scored two takedowns and a leg lace for a quick 6-0 lead. With less than a minute left in the period, the World medalist collected two more takedowns to finish off the match with a 10-0 shutout.
He was the only wrestler on the card to win his match by tech fall.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Taylor Miller at firstname.lastname@example.org.
