Zain Retherford (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) has been selected as Athlete of the Week on March 19, 2019.

A 2017 Senior World Team member and 2012 Cadet World champion, Retherford helped the USA to a third-place finish at the 2019 Men’s Freestyle World Cup in Yakutsk, Russia, going 4-0 at the event.

Retherford started his perfect weekend with a solid 9-2 decision against Amiran Vakhtangashvili in the opening dual against Georgia. The U.S. went on to win the dual 7-3.

The Red, White and Blue fell to Iran in the second dual on criteria, 5-5 (21-18). Retherford, once again, had a decisive performance, defeating Morteza Ghiasi Cheka, 6-1.

In the final two duals, the USA dominated and Retherford registered back-to-back technical falls.

Against Mongolia, Retherford scored five takedowns on 2014 University World and Military World bronze winner Batmagnai Batchuluun for a 10-0 win at 65 kg.

In the third-place dual vs. Japan, Retherford produced a 10-0 tech fall against 2014 Junior World bronze medalist and 2011 Cadet World bronze medalist Daichi Takatani, finishing an unblemished weekend.
