Alec Pantaleo (Canton, Mich./Titan Mercury/ Cliff Keen) has been selected as Athlete of the Week on June 6, 2019.

Last weekend, Pantaleo won the 2019 UWW U23 Men’s Freestyle Nationals at 70 kg. His dominant performance earned him the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler award.

To reach the best-of-three finals, Pantaleo earned technical falls in his first three matches, outscoring his opponents, 31-1. In the finals Pantaleo defeated Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club’s, Jimmy Hoffman in two straight matches.

Pantaleo cruised in match one to take a 7-1 victory. In match two, Pantaleo took Hoffman down and turned him with two consecutive gut wrenches to take a 6-0 lead. He added a step-out at the end of the first period to extend his lead to 7-0 going into the break. In the second period, Pantaleo scored two points on a beautiful double leg takedown and another misdirection shot to secure the 11-0 technical fall.

Pantaleo is a 2019 Michigan graduate, where he was a three-time All-American for the Wolverines. He recently signed with the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club and made the commitment to pursue freestyle full-time. Pantaleo has already experienced freestyle success and was a member of the 2016 Junior World Team.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
