Sebastian Rivera (Jackson, N.J./Northwestern) has been selected as Athlete of the Week on Jan. 1, 2019.

Rivera, a sophomore and 2018 All-American for Northwestern, won his first Midlands title over the weekend, dominating the bracket at 125 pounds.

En route to the crown, Rivera, ranked No. 2 in the country, knocked off 2018 NCAA champion and No. 1 wrestler Spencer Lee of Iowa in the finals. The Wildcat controlled the match, taking down the always-dominant Lee three times, while Lee was not able to score a single takedown.

In order to get to the Midlands finals, Rivera tallied four technical fall wins to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at
