Solin Piearcy (San Jose, Calif./Menlo College) has been selected as Athlete of the Week on Feb. 12, 2019.

Piearcy was instrumental in helping Menlo College win its first Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) national team title this past weekend in Atlanta, Ga.

Now a three-time All-American, Piearcy, a junior for the Oaks, won the 136-pound title, earning technical falls in all five of her matches en route to her first WCWA individual title.

Piearcy, ranked No. 2 going into the weekend, opened the tournament with three-consecutive 10-0 shut outs. In the semifinals, she shut down 2016 Cadet World bronze medalist Kayla Marano of Emmanuel in a dominating 14-4 performance.

The 136-pound final pitted Piearcy against top-ranked Nicole Joseph of King, a 2018 All-American.

After a slow start, Piearcy led, 1-1, on criteria, going into the break. In the second period, Piearcy got a chance on top, taking down Joseph with a low single attack. The Oak rattled off four leg laces to end it with an 11-1 tech fall.

The win from Piearcy mathematically locked up the team title for Menlo as the squad was trailing Simon Fraser, entering the bout.

Menlo becomes only the seventh school to capture a women’s college national team title. The Oaks set out for the NAIA Championships in March in hopes of repeating their efforts.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
