Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on Aug. 13, 2019.
Over the weekend in Lima, Peru, Burroughs won his third Pan American Games title, navigating a tough 74 kg bracket, which featured two other World medalists.
To open his tournament, Burroughs, a 2012 Olympic champion and four-time World champion, overpowered home-crowd favorite Abel Herrera Pastor of Peru, who is a three-time Pan Am Championships medalist, with a quick 10-0 tech fall.
In the semifinals, Burroughs downed four-time Senior World medalist Geandry Garzon of Cuba in an eventful 15-4 technical fall, which featured his famous double, to move onto the finals.
For gold, the American emerged victorious in a close battle with 2011 World silver medalist Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico. Burroughs used a late takedown to give him a 4-1 victory.
It was the second time this year that Burroughs has defeated Gomez.
Winning three Games titles is an impressive feat as the Pan American Games are held once every four years. Burroughs also won titles in 2011 and 2015.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at firstname.lastname@example.org.
