Mallory Velte (Sacramento, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on April 2, 2019.

At this weekend’s 5th Annual Beat the Streets Los Angeles Benefit and International Competition, Team USA’s women’s freestylers took on athletes from India and Mexico in an event dubbed Hollywood Wrestles Bollywood.

Velte, a 2018 World bronze medalist and California native, faced 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi Malik from India.

The two athletes traded takedowns in the first period, but it was Velte who led at the break, 2-2, on criteria. In the second period, Velte scored on a low-leg attack, but shortly after, Malik took the advantage on criteria, scoring a takedown on a double.

With less than 30 seconds left, Velte executed a foot sweep that was eventually awarded two points. With a late effort from Malik, Velte scored one more takedown on a go-behind to close out the match with an 8-4 win.

Velte’s win helped propel the U.S. to an 8-2 win at the event.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
