Daton Fix (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC/Cowboy RTC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on May 22, 2018.

Fix, a 2017 Junior World champion, put on a show at the 2018 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Rochester, Minn., last weekend, earning the last remaining spot in Final X at 57 kg.

With U.S. Open champion Tony Ramos sitting in last weekend’s tournament finals, Fix had to navigate his way through the challenge bracket. In doing so, he defeated Eddie Klimara, Zane Richards and Zach Sanders, collectively outscoring them, 33-4.

Fix, who just wrapped up his true-freshman season at Oklahoma State, defeated freestyle veteran and four-time All-American Sanders with a 10-0 tech fall to advance to the best-of-three finals against two-time World Team member Ramos.

It set up for a 2018 U.S. Open rematch, where Ramos took a 2-2 win on criteria. This time, Fix flipped the result.

In the first bout, Fix struck first, forcing Ramos out of bounds. Thanks to a late takedown out of an exciting scramble at the end of the match, Fix walked away with a 4-1 win and a 1-0 advantage in the series.

The second match saw a lot more action as Fix scored four on an inside trip before following it up with a turn on a gut wrench. Fix carried a 7-0 lead into the second period, which Ramos was unable to overcome as the youngster from Oklahoma sealed the series with a 10-3 decision.

With the win, Fix earned his spot in Final X at 57 kg, which is the last stage in the World Team Trials process. Waiting for him in the best-of-three finals is 2017 Senior World silver medalist Thomas Gilman.

The two will go head-to-head for the World Team spot on June 9 in Lincoln, Neb.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
