Jacarra Winchester (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on June 12, 2018.

Winchester punched her ticket to the Senior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in October, making her first Senior World Team. She took out 2017 World bronze medalist Becka Leathers in the first installment of Final X in Lincoln, Neb., last weekend.

In the first bout in the best-of-three series at 55 kg in women’s freestyle, Winchester gave up the first takedown but responded quickly with a four-pointer, catching Leathers off balance and following it up with two points on exposure. The two exchanged takedowns throughout the bout, but it was Winchester who walked away with a decisive 10-4 win.

Later, they met up again for round two. Again, Winchester, gave up the first point but that was all she would surrender. The California native closed out both periods with a takedown and added a step out early in the second period for another conclusive win with a 5-1 decision.

The victory put Winchester on her second World Team at any level as she was also a bronze medalist at the 2014 University World Championships.

Winchester continues her impressive year on the national scene, also winning her first U.S. Open title in April before claiming the crown at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in May, which qualified her for Final X.

Internationally, Winchester has put together a strong season so far, winning the Outstanding Ukrainian Memorial at 57 kg and earning bronze at the Bill Farrell International.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
