Emily Shilson (Maple Grove, Minn./Titan Mercury WC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on July 10, 2018.

Shilson won the 2018 Cadet World title at 43 kg at the Cadet World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, last week. She was dominant throughout the tournament, giving up only five points en route to World gold.

A 2017 Cadet World silver medalist, Shilson opened the tournament with a fall over Romania’s Ana Maria Cristescu and went on to collect a 10-0 technical fall over 2017 Cadet World bronze medalist Simran Simran of India.

In the semifinals, the Minnesota native took down three-time European Championships medalist Victoria Aleksandrova of Russia with an 11-1 tech fall to push Shilson into the Cadet World finals for the second year a row.

Coming through the other side of the bracket and awaiting Shilson in the finals was 2017 Cadet World champion at 38 kg, Shahana Nazarova of Azerbaijan.

Nazarova struck first with a takedown in the opening seconds to take a 2-0 lead into the second period. The Azeri extended her lead to 4-0, executing a double, but while Nazarova was looking for a turn, Shilson snuck on top and worked a gut wrench for six turns for a 14-4 technical fall and a World title.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
