Spencer Lee (Murrysville, Pa./University of Iowa) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on January 23, 2018.

The true freshman has been sensational since entering the starting lineup for the Hawkeyes. In his most recent outing, Lee took down top-ranked senior Nathan Tomasello of Ohio State, a past NCAA champion, 3-2, to open the Iowa-Ohio State dual meet in Columbus, Ohio.

Lee now holds a 9-1 overall record at 125 pounds on the season, and is 3-0 since coming out of redshirt on January 5 against Michigan State. Four of Lee's wins have come by pin, while three others were earned by technical fall. On top of the Tomasello win, Lee owns victories over returning All-Americans Nick Piccininni of Oklahoma State and Sean Russell of Edinboro.

Recent success has moved Lee on an upward trajectory in the national rankings. He is currently slotted at No. 3 across the major national polls behind reigning NCAA champion Darian Cruz of Lehigh and Rutgers talent Nick Suriano, neither of whom he has faced.

Lee won three age-group World titles in a row from 2014 to 2016, two in the Junior division and one as a Cadet. He has solidified himself as one of the top freestyle prospects in the U.S. with another year of Junior eligibility available.

Throughout his time at Franklin Regional High School, Lee was a three-time Pennsylvania state champion, four-time state finalist and remained undefeated until the final match of his high school career, where he was upset in the state finals. He was among the most highly coveted high school recruits in recent memory when he committed to Iowa.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
