Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Minnesota Storm) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on July 6, 2017.
Last weekend, Zillmer posted a 3-1 record at the Lubomir Ivanovic Gedza Memorial International held in Kragujevac, Serbia, to claim a bronze medal in Greco-Roman action.
Zillmer opened the competition with wins over Janko Ivetic of Serbia and 2017 Asian Junior silver medalist Amirmohammad Noroozipasand of Iran to advance to the semifinals. He dropped a tight 2-0 bout to 2013 World University bronze medalist Mikheil Kajaia of Serbia to fall into the bronze medal match where he pinned returning Gedza International champion Stjepan Lavric of Croatia in 5:25 to cement the bronze.
While primarily training Greco-Roman since graduating college two years ago, Zillmer qualified for the U.S. National Team in both Greco-Roman and freestyle for 2017. He finished as the World Team Trials runner-up in Greco-Roman at 98 kg/215 lbs. and in third place at the freestyle World Team Trials at 97 kg/213 lbs.
Zillmer has earned international silver medals at the Herman Kare Tournament and Dave Schultz Memorial International this year in Greco-Roman competition pushing his international medal count for 2017 up to three following his efforts in Serbia.
He was a NCAA All-American at 184 pounds for North Dakota State University and head coach Roger Kish in 2015.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
