Alex Dieringer (Stillwater, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) has been selected as Athlete of the Week on Nov. 14, 2016.

The powerful American prospect topped the 74 kg/163 lbs. men’s freestyle division at the Bill Farrell International over the weekend to win his first gold medal at an international event.

Dieringer navigated to the championship match courtesy of three 10-0 technical fall victories coming over Paul Saraiva, Quinton Godley and Chance Marsteller.

In the finals, Dieringer ousted Uzbekistan talent Bekzod Abdurakhmonov, 8-2. Abdurakhmonov scored the opening takedown of the bout, but it was all Dieringer thereafter. Direinger tied the match 2-2 at the break and tacked on a four-point outside fireman’s carry plus a gutwrench to seal the win.

Abdurakhomov was a World bronze medalist in 2014 and finished in fifth place at the 2016 Olympic Games where he tallied a win over U.S. legend Jordan Burroughs. He was also the 2014 Asian Games champion, 2015 Asian champion, 2015 Golden Grand Prix Finals champion and defending champion at the Bill Farrell.

Since winning his third NCAA championship for the Oklahoma State Cowboys last March, Dieringer has been quite active and successful on the freestyle scene. He finished in third place at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and posted a 2-2 record at the Men’s Freestyle World Cup.

Dieringer competed two times at the Junior World Championships and won a silver medal at the prestigious event in 2013. He was also a three-time USA Wrestling Junior Nationals champion, once in Greco-Roman and twice in freestyle.

He plans to continue his freestyle development by traveling to Ukraine for the World Wrestling Clubs Cup later this month.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
