Shirzad Ahmadi of Coventry, Conn. has been selected as Wrestler of the Week for Oct. 19, 2015.

At 66 years of age, Ahmadi became the first U.S. wrestler to win a gold medal at the Veterans World Championships in both freestyle and Greco-Roman in the same year.

Ahmadi scored a fall over Viktor Chipkov of Russia and a 5-0 decision over Abolghasem Farahmand of Iran to claim the Greco-Roman title at 63 kg in Veterans Div. G. He also went 3-0 in a four-man round robin to claim the freestyle crown at the same weight.

The two gold medals earned by Ahmadi in Athens push his Veterans World Championships gold medal count to 12, the most of any American. In addition, he became only the sixth U.S. wrestler to earn a Veterans World title in Greco-Roman.

Each week will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
