USA Weightlifting Statement on Covid 19 / Coronavirus regarding Upcoming Events as of March 9
USA Weightlifting, in consultation with the USA Weightlifting Sports Medicine Society and relevant literature, including the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee's (USOPC) Infectious Disease Working Group reports, have taken the following position as of March 9, 2020.
The upcoming USA Weightlifting events in Lombard IL (National Championship), Orlando FL (National Masters Championship), New York City NY (Golden Gala) and Winston Salem NC (American Open Series 2 and National Youth Championships), as well as Elite Camp (Colorado Springs CO) are going ahead as scheduled at this time.Of course, we will be monitoring the status reports by local, regional, state officials and the CDC as per their recommendations in each of these domestic events, and USAW reserves the right to alter plans accordingly
USA Weightlifting has begun to liaise with local authorities in each of our forthcoming locations.
While the 2020 IWF World Junior Championships is cancelled, Team USA’s participation in the IberoAmerican Championship in Cali, Colombia and Pan American Championship in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic are at this time unaffected.Of course, we will be monitoring the status reports by the state department, and the CDC as per their recommendations in each of these international events, and USAW reserves the right to alter plans accordingly.
While cancellation remains a possibility, USA Weightlifting will only cancel these events as an absolute last resort upon the advice or instruction of local or state authorities or on the advice of our USA Weightlifting Sports Medicine Society. Before cancellation, USA Weightlifting will explore the options of events behind closed doors or any other option that is agreeable to medical advice and state/local authorities.
With respect to local events, USA Weightlifting respects the right of local meet directors and LWCs to make decisions regarding events they are holding. Given the average size of local meets, there does not appear to be any reason to cancel events at this time. However, local meet directors are advised to liaise closely with their local and state authorities regarding that discussion. Local meet directors and coaching course hosts and instructors should click here for coronavirus guidance.
In the event of cancellation of an international event, USA Weightlifting will:
- Honor the ranking list for the event per the original selection procedures, beginning the invite process again, provided the event is organized by the end of the calendar year 2020.
In the event of cancellation or postponement of a National event, USA Weightlifting will:
- Refunds will not be permitted on non-refundable registrations unless the event is completely cancelled (as oppose to restricted to registered participants only).
- Registrations will be able to be transferred to another event at no cost.
- USA Weightlifting will work to re-arrange the event as soon as possible.
USA Weightlifting already has a large multi-disciplinary team at both National and International Events, led by MD and DO-level doctors. These medical professionals will be on hand at our forthcoming events, as usual, and will be briefed fully by the USA Weightlifting Sports Medicine Society before each event.
USA Weightlifting recommends taking the following precautions with respect to Covid-19 / Coronavirus, per the USA Weightlifting Sports Medicine Society:
