USA Weightlifting Planning on Full In-Person Competition During Nationals Week

March 22, 2021, 3:43 p.m. (ET)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (March 22, 2021) -- USA Weightlifting today is excited to announce it is moving forward with plans to hold this summer's 2021 Nike National Championships Week powered by Rogue Fitness fully in-person.

National Championships Week, which encompasses USA Weightlifting’s National Youth, National Junior, National Under 25 and National Championships is scheduled for June 25-July 4 at the TCF Center in Detroit, Michigan.

The decision to continue with plans of holding a 100% in-person event comes after consultation with the USA Weightlifting Sports Medicine Society, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee’s Sports Medicine team and other leading medical experts who said the nation’s stabilizing COVID-19 case count and vaccine rollout can enable USA Weightlifting to hold a safe in-person event.

“We are thrilled to share this news with our members,” USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews said. “We cannot wait to get to Detroit and celebrate the sport we love with our community in a safe and responsible manner.”

USA Weightlifting will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and adjust its plans accordingly. While USA Weightlifting is planning on a 100% in-person event, should conditions warrant, USA Weightlifting can still opt to hold a hybrid in-person and remote event, or a fully remote event.

After a successful trial of a hybrid event at this month’s American Open Series 1 and National University Championships in Salt Lake City, USA Weightlifting is evaluating the unique competition model and what place it has on the National Events calendar.

For now, all current restrictions for participants, including masking requirements, production of a negative COVID-19 PCR test, record of vaccination or recovery will remain in effect, per our Back to Lifting Guidelines.

However, should conditions warrant, these and other restrictions on the event could be modified or lifted, including increasing access for spectators.

Any decisions governing the event will be made and announced no later than May 13, 2021, two weeks prior to the registration deadline for the event, 2PM Mountain Time, Thursday, May 27, 2021.

Further guidelines governing the meet will be presented in an updated version of our Back to Lifting Guidelines closer to the competition.
