COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (November 20, 2020) -- With member safety paramount, and in line with our Back to Lifting Guidelines, we regret to announce that we have made the difficult decision to cancel the in-person 2020 National Championships, National Youth Championships and American Open Finals competitions scheduled for December 3-6 in Atlanta.
Registered athletes will receive an immediate refund of their registration fees for the now cancelled in-person competitions. Members who purchased a COVID-19 test from USA Weightlifting will receive a refund. Those who reserved a hotel room through our booking portal will have their reservations canceled automatically, without fee, with no action required*.
An online National Championships, Youth National Championships and American Open Finals competition will now be held on the same dates, December 3-6, and registration is open via BARS. Athletes who wish to participate in the online event, must register by 2PM Mountain Time on December 1st. The final schedule will be released by 2PM Mountain on December 2. Please note your registration will not transfer automatically from the in-person event. The online event will be streamed at USAWeightlifting.org.
For international team selection purposes USA Weightlifting will host a virtual selection camp December 9-12 pertaining to the currently scheduled 2020 Pan American Championships, 2021 IWF World Junior Championships and the East Asian Championships, following the protocol announced in May 2020. For questions about the selection camp contact Lorene.Halford@USAWeightlifting.org.
USA Weightlifting consulted with the USA Weightlifting Sports Medicine Society, U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee Sports Medicine, other leading medical experts and partners in Atlanta to reach its decision to cancel the in-person competition. Along with the rest of the country, COVID-19 infection rates in the Atlanta area are moving higher and are expected to cross the safety threshold laid out in the Back to Lifting Guidelines prior to the start of the now-cancelled event.
“2020 is the first year in our history where we won’t be able to hold an in-person Senior or Youth National Championships or an American Open Finals,” USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews said. “That’s obviously disappointing and we apologize and are thinking of those athletes who were very much looking forward to competing especially those for whom this was perhaps a unique opportunity to attend the Nationals. But the science and data are clear. Now is not the right time, even with the extensive precautions we had in place. We look forward to welcoming the Weightlifting family to Nationals Week in Detroit next June 25-July 4 and at national competitions throughout 2021.”
USA Weightlifting recognizes the toll the uncertainty of Covid-19 has been taking on athletes and coaches around the nation. We want to offer support to athletes and coaches around the nation and draw your attention to the Athlete Wellness Program. The program includes access to mental health resources free of charge.
