Subject: A Message about COVID-19

March 17, 2020

Dear Members,

In these uncertain times, we wanted to reassure you that we are doing all we can to further our mission of promoting and growing the sport we all love. At the same time, we want to ensure we are supporting our weightlifting family to the best of our ability.

What are we doing?

COVID-19 RELIEF FUND The USA Weightlifting staff is launching a COVID-19 relief fund, to help members of our community whose livelihoods are in danger from the pandemic. It is our hope, if you have the means, to make a small contribution to this fund, to help offset unrecoverable costs for our members whose events and businesses have been disrupted by the pandemic. You can make a donation here, just select COVID-19 on the Program Menu drop-down menu

KEEP LIFTING! With so much disruption in our sport, and society at large, it’s easy to think that weightlifting can go by the wayside. Here’s what we’re doing to help you stay engaged and active in the sport.

ONLINE COMPETITIONS We’re launching two, free online competitions. These sanctioned USA Weightlifting meets will be held entirely online. You will submit a photo of your bodyweight and a video of a snatch and clean & jerk. A National Referee will review your lifts, and, if verified, your total will be added to your membership profile. You will be able to use this total to qualify for the 2020 National Championships, 2020 National Youth Championships and/or the 2020 American Open Series 2 or 3. Additionally, this online competition can be used by Masters athletes as a qualifier for World Masters and Pan Am Masters competitions. More details about this competition and how to sign-up is available here. The first online event runs through March 31, with the second, identical competition running April 1-30. Prizes, which will be determined later, will be awarded.

WORKING (OUT) FROM HOME We understand it might not be possible to head to the gym to train. We’re working with our partners at BarBend, TRUCE and others to develop exercises and training programs you can do at home, with or without a barbell. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay in the loop.

SOCIAL MEDIA SPOTLIGHTS We hope you #KeepLifting, and in the spirit of continuing our weightlifting journey, we will be featuring some of your highlights on our social media channels! Tag us and share your lifts using hashtag #KeepLifting and watch our social media channels to see the how you, our members, are committed to #KeepLifting.

What can I do?

SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY! While your local gym may have to close its doors, consider keeping your membership active, if you have the means. Many of our affiliated clubs are small businesses, and rely on memberships like yours to stay afloat. While peoples’ lives and livelihoods are being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is our hope that by our weightlifting family sticking together, we will emerge from this crisis as strong as ever.

STAY CONNECTED! If you have a home gym, and are willing to share your space (safely) with one or two fellow athletes, consider joining our Facebook group: USA Weightlifting Home Gym Connection here. If you’re looking for a place to train, the group could be a great resource for you. Please note, we ask that you observe all orders and recommendations from local, state and federal health officials concerning social distancing, sanitation and curfews.

STAY STRONG! We are in this together. In an effort to protect the health of our staff and our colleagues in the Olympic & Paralympic family, the USA Weightlifting National Office staff will be working from home and operating with limited office hours. If you need to reach us, it’s best to email us at usaw@usaweightlifting.org. Direct email addresses for staff are available here. Thanks for your patience.

More Details

2020 NATIONALS & BEYOND As of right now, we’re planning on holding the 2020 National Championships as scheduled May 14-17 in Lombard, Illinois. We are in frequent communication with health officials in DuPage County and the State of Illinois about the feasibility of holding the event. We will update information as we get it on our COVID-19 Information Page here. Out of an abundance of caution, we have canceled or postponed the 2020 National Masters Championships, Golden Gala, Team USA Pro Days and Combine events. We have extended the High School Throwdown until the end of April.

FLEXIBLE REGISTRATION We’ve instituted a flexible registration policy for those enrolled in a USA Weightlifting coaching course. For coaching courses, USA Weightlifting will continue to hold coursing courses as scheduled. Participants who wish to postpone their participation in a course in which they have registered, can contact education@usaweightlifting.org to have their course registration transferred without penalty. Should a course be canceled, our standard cancelation policy applies, where a registration refund or free registration transfer would be made available.

For local meets, should a meet director choose to postpone their event, they now have the option to transfer their sanction to a different date at no charge. Meet directors can contact usaw@usaweightlifting.org for details. Participants should speak with their local meet director for information about registration transfer or refund policies.

ONLINE RESOURCES Head to our COVID-19 Information page here for useful information about the pandemic including resources available to you. Keep this link handy as we continually update it.

Please stay safe. We will get through this together. As always, please be in touch if we can be of any assistance.

Thank you for being a member of USA Weightlifting.

Sincerely,
Phil Andrews
