2020 World Masters Championships canceled

April 23, 2020, 1:33 p.m. (ET)

USA Weightlifting has been informed that the IWF Masters Committee has decided to cancel the 2020 World Masters Championships originally scheduled for August 28 to September 5 in Orlando, Florida. The following message comes from the USA National Masters Chairman, Michael Cohen:

The committee considered very carefully the current ongoing COVID-19 situation and are very grateful and at the same time very, very sorry for the extreme difficult position this COVID-19 has put on all of us, but mostly the 2020 organizers.

In order to avoid more time consuming and financial damage, the IWF Masters Committee and Coopted Members have come to the decision to cancel the 2020 World Masters Championships. The reasons given were many, including limited training available to athletes worldwide, suspension of US visas, cost of international flights, and proximity of dates to other rescheduled continental championships.

The IWF Masters Committee has granted the 2022 World Masters Championships to the USA (in Orlando). Because of this cancellation, all those athletes who have entered the worlds, will be refunded the $174 paid to USA Weightlifting for entry fees. At this time, the 2021 World Masters Games in Japan are still scheduled to take place. Please allow approximately 5 working days for your refund to appear. The National Master Championships will go ahead as scheduled, now on September 3 - 6 (a 4 day meet, with Technical Conference on Wednesday, Sep 2).

A preliminary schedule will be released this week. Entries will be opened back up for a limited number of days starting on Friday, April 24 to allow those who did not enter a chance to enter at the new dates (and also given that so many other competitions have been cancelled - including the Worlds). Unfortunately, these entries will be capped at 75 and entries can only be opened at the late fee, since many athletes have already paid the late entry fee at the original dates. All information will be posted on our website, (qualifying totals, entry fees, deadlines, preliminary start list and schedule, hotel, etc).

Also note that the 2020 Pan American Masters Championships have been rescheduled to October 8-11. Registration is open through September 8 at

We wish all of you safe training during these still uncertain times and hope to see you at some competition this year and for the Worlds in 2022.
