CJ Cummings (Team Divergent, 73kg, Beaufort, SC)  hit the stage Saturday at the 2019 IWF World Weightlifting Championships.

In the snatch, CJ made his opening attempt at 145kg, and followed it up with a good lift at 150kg. He missed his third attempt at 155kg, which would have been a new Junior World Record.

“That 155kg was going to be a record,” Cummings said. “I think I just cut my pull a little bat on that, but it felt alright.”

In the clean & jerk, CJ missed his opener at 183kg. He bounced back and hit it on his second. CJ went for a medal with a 191kg clean and jerk, but came up short. A medal was not in the cards for CJ tonight.

“The first attempt I felt tired, so the clean wasn’t that good. I didn’t want to go down without a fight,” Cummings said.

Earlier Saturday, Hunter Elam (Mash Mafia Weightlifting, Winston-Salem, NC) and Jessica Lucero (Academy of Weightlifting, Orange, CA) took the platform in the women’s 59kg B session.

Hunter made her opening snatch of 90kg, but missed 93kg on her second and third attempts.

In the clean & jerk, Hunter made 110kg on her second attempt. Her 200kg total put her in 16th place overall.

Jessica got on the board in the snatch with 86kg on her third attempt. She missed 86kg on both her first and second attempts.

In the clean & jerk, Jessica made 105kg on her second attempt. Her 191kg total gave her a 20th place finish.

Sunday’s action for Team USA kicks off with Christian Rodriguez Ocasio in the men’s 81kg C session at 10 AM local time. Then Harrison Maurus lifts in the men’s 81kg B session at 2:25 PM, followed by Mattie Sasser in the women’s 64kg A session.
