Selection Procedures for 2020-2024 Quadrennium

Oct. 09, 2019, 12 p.m. (ET)

The USA Weightlifting Athletes Advisory Council and Board of Directors have approved selection procedures for the 2020-2024 quadrennium.

These procedures will apply for any international competition held on May, 1 2020 or after, in other words after the final qualifying period for the 2020 Olympic Games.

These selection procedures do not govern international Masters events, or events controlled by the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (i.e. the Olympic Games, Pan American Games or Youth Olympic Games).

Every coach and athlete is encouraged to read these procedures in detail and ask any question, no matter how big or small to Phil Andrews – phil.andrews@usaweightlifting.org and/or 719-200-6020.

The primary changes are as follows:
-Selection periods will always be 6 months in length. The final qualification event will typically be the last nationally held event that falls outside the IWF “long list” registration window of 2 months (For non-World Championship events) or 3 months (for World Championship events, including the Youth and Junior World Championship).
-The selection is made by the % of the NRS (National Ranking Score) which is an average of the Top 5 totals made in the preceding World event or Top 3 in a Pan American Event.
-There is an injury clause available to athletes who have not been able to qualify to an event due to an evidenced injury and need to keep themselves eligible for the Olympic Games.
-There is an additional minimum criteria applied to the (Snr) World Championships and (Snr) Pan American Championships.

Please be aware that the procedures may be changed if the IOC, IWF, Pan Am Sports, USOPC or PAWF change their procedures.

The procedures can also be changed if 70% or more of the USA Weightlifting Athlete Advisory Council and USA Weightlifting Board of Directors vote to change, and the selection process for a given event has not yet begun.
