COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (July 31, 2019) -- USA Weightlifting is proud to announce the squad that will represent the United States of America at the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation World Weightlifting Championships September 18-27 in Pattaya, Thailand.
Team USA’s squad is packed with three Olympians, world and Pan American champions, international medalists and world record holders. The entire squad looks to capitalize on the Gold-level qualifier the World Championships brings to better their chances of making the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Team.
“This squad is going to Thailand to win medals,” USA Weightlifting’s Senior Director of Sport Performance and Coaching Education Mike Gattone said. “These athletes are the best of the best. They represent the strongest athletes in America and I can’t wait to see what they put up at Worlds in September.”
For Team USA Women, Alyssa Ritchey (49kg, Team Juggernaut), Jourdan Delacruz (55kg, Power and Grace Performance), Jessica Lucero (59kg, Academy of Weightlifting), Hunter Elam (59kg, Mash Mafia Weightlifting), Pan American Games medalist Mattie Sasser (64kg, Forza Weightlifting), 2018 World Championships Medalist in the clean & jerk Mattie Rogers (71kg, Team O.C.), Meredith Alwine (71kg, Mash Mafia Weightlifting), Olympian Jenny Arthur (76kg, unattached) and two-time Olympian and 2019 Pan Am Games Champion Sarah Robles (+87kg, Team Houston) were all named to the World Team squad for the second consecutive year.
Olympian Morghan King (49kg, Power and Grace Performance), 2019 Pan Am Games bronze medalist Katherine Nye (71kg, Team Hercules) and Sarabeth Jumper (59kg, Catalyst Athletics) are new additions to the 2019 World Squad, compared to 2018.
On the men’s side, Jordan Wissinger (67kg, Garage Strength), Alex Lee (67kg, Alee Athletics), three-time Junior World Champion CJ Cummings (73kg, Team Beaufort), 2019 Pan Am Games bronze medalist Harrison Maurus (81kg, unattached), Jordan Cantrell (89kg, Mash Mafia Weightlifting), Jason Bonnick (96kg, Vero Beach Weightlifting), Nathan Damron (96kg, Mash Mafia Weightlifting), D’Angelo Osorio (102kg, Lift 6 for 6), 2019 Pan Am Games Champion Wes Kitts (109kg, California Strength) and Caine Wilkes (+109kg, Little League Weightlifting) return to the World Team squad after being named to the squad in 2018.
New for 2019’s squad are Christian Rodriguez Ocasio (81kg, California Strength) and John Downey (89kg, Academy of Weightlifting).
Team USA will travel to Tokyo, Japan, prior to the competition to participate in a warm-up camp. This will allow athletes to get acclimated to the vast time change from the United States and arrive in Thailand at their very best.
