Future Sport Leaders Academy

July 11, 2019, 12:24 p.m. (ET)

USA Weightlifting (USAW) members could get the opportunity to “look behind the curtain” of sport governance as USAW has partnered with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) in launching the Future Sports Leaders Academy.

Consisting of three units, this program is a college-level class that explores different aspects of amateur sport governance and is designed for high school students wishing to enter the sport management industry.

Unit one discusses international and U.S. sport organizations and the career opportunities

that exist within them. Unit two examines the broader social impact of sport together with the challenges that confront it. Unit three allows participants to discover the ways sport leadership and culture interact to influence necessary change.

Each unit consists of four hours of study with the overall class taking 12 hours to complete in total.

USAW members currently enrolled (or entering next semester) the 11th and 12th grades are encouraged to apply for the Future Sports Leaders Academy. Those accepted must commit to attending the sessions in Colorado Springs. The cost is $75 to cover all units and materials. For non-local members, transportation and housing in Colorado Springs are not included.

This is a highly-selective program with admissions limited to 35 students. USAW members may apply here:  https://forms.gle/Jt7j5TWXYEm9LwtSA  by August 1, 2019.
