(Guatemala City, Guatemala) April 28, 2019 – Team USA made history at the 2019 Pan American Championships, winning 43 total medals, breaking 51 World, Pan American and American Records. Both the men’s and women’s teams were named champions at the closing ceremony in Guatemala City Saturday.

Team USA took nearly half of the Pan American titles as eight out of 20 team members were named Pan American Champions. Forty percent of the 2019 Pan American champions are from Team USA. Alyssa Ritchey (49kg), Jourdan Delacruz (55kg), CJ Cummings (73kg), Kate Nye (71kg), D’Angelo Osorio (102kg) Wes Kitts (109kg), Caine Wilkes (+109kg) and Sarah Robles (+87kg) all earned the top spot in their body weight category. 17 of Team USA’s athletes won medals for a total of 22 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze.

“When you consider what a big qualifier this was for the Olympics, people were tending to try big weights because everyone wants to up their ROBI points and we had a really high success rate,” said Mike Gattone, USA Weightlifting’s Senior Director of Sports Performance and Coaching Education. “It was a fantastic all around team effort.”

CJ Cummings was named Best Male Lifter after going six for six and breaking 22 records on consecutive lifts. He swept all three gold medals in the 73kg category, lifting 153kg in the snatch and 191kg in the clean and jerk for a 344kg total.  Cummings came away with the Junior and Senior Pan American and American records in the snatch, total and clean and jerk, as well as all three Junior World records.

Kate Nye earned Best Female lifter of the competition, also going six for six and sweeping the gold medals in the 71kg body weight category. Every lift she made broke a record starting with her opening snatch of 104kg, a Junior Pan American Record. Her second snatch of 107kg became the Junior and Senior Pan American records and Junior and Senior American Records, all of which she reset with her 110kg final snatch.

Nye’s first clean and jerk of 128kg set the Junior Pan American record total, previously held by Meredith Alwine for her total at the 2018 World Championships. Nye’s second clean and jerk of 131kg reset the total record she’d broken minutes earlier. On her third clean and jerk attempt of 135kg, Nye improved her total to 245kg, breaking the Junior and Senior Pan American records in the lift and total, as well as the Junior American records in the lift and total.

Wes Kitts also had a record-breaking performance as he defended his Pan American Champion title in the 109kg body weight category. Kitts went three for three in the clean and jerks hitting 207kg and 214kg before jumping to 223kg to take the Senior Pan American and Senior American records in the lifts. The lift brought his total to 399kg breaking Wes Barnett’s 1996 American record total of 395kg and setting the Senior Pan American total record.

Alyssa Ritchey became the lightest American to lift the highest percentage of her bodyweight. Her 107kg clean and jerk was 9kg over double body weight, or about 218 percent. She took home the Pan American and American records in clean and jerk and total with a 191kg total.

Mattie Sasser (64kg) is now the heaviest American women to jerk double body weight, a title previously held by teammate Jessica Lucero (59kg). Sasser clean and jerked 129kg earning a gold medal in the lift and a bronze medal for her 227kg total.
