2018 World Championships Team Announced

Sept. 19, 2018, 1:10 p.m. (ET)

USA Weightlifting named its squad for the 2018 International Weightlifting Federation World Weightlifting Championships on Wednesday. The competition will take place in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on November 1-11.

This will be the first international competition to utilize the new bodyweight categories announced by the IWF in July, which also marks the first Olympic qualification event for Tokyo 2020.

“It was exciting to see our best athletes compete in the new bodyweight categories at the American Open Series 3 in Las Vegas over the weekend,” said Phil Andrews, USA Weightlifting CEO. “We are interested to see how the new bodyweight categories shape the competition in Ashgabat and begin the Olympic qualification pathway for our athletes.”

Returning Team USA members Harrison Maurus, Mattie Rogers and Sarah Robles broke a 12-year medal drought at the 2017 IWF World Championships in Anaheim, CA.

“I’m proud of the work these athletes have put in to get to reach this competitive level,” said USA Weightlifting’s Senior Director of Sports Performance, Mike Gattone. “We’re confident in this squad’s ability to perform on the world stage and bring success for Team USA.”
