LIVE From Buenos Aires: Team USA Arrives at Youth Olympic Games

By Kevin Farley - in Buenos Aires | Oct. 08, 2018, 10:52 a.m. (ET)

Team USA arrived to Buenos Aires late last week for the Youth Olympic Games. It was a long flight from the United States, but Jerome Smith and Peyton Brown say they ready to perform on their biggest stage yet.

Training is going well. The training hall, located immediately behind the competition venue at the Europa Pavilion at Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Park, gives the athletes an idea of where they will lift. Jerome is set to lift in the 69kg A session at 5PM Eastern time, tomorrow, October 9 with Peyton Brown lifting in the 58kg A session at 3:30PM Eastern on Thursday, October 10.

It is early spring in Buenos Aires, with a chill in the air in the mornings and evenings, but warming into the 70s in the afternoon. The athletes say they are comfortable with the weather and life in the Olympic Village. USA Weightlifting and Team USA pins are a hot commodity in the village, with both athletes' credential lanyards reading like an atlas with countries from around the world.

On Saturday night, Peyton and Jerome participated in the Opening Ceremony. This was the first Opening Ceremony of an Olympic Games held outside of a stadium. Instead, the public was invited to the iconic Obelisk in central Buenos Aires to watch the ceremony. More than 250,000 people attended, an Olympic Record. Both athletes said their favorite moment was watching acrobats, dancing on the Olympic Rings. It was quite a moment. Check out the Olympic Channel for highlights from the Opening Ceremony.

Training resumes today and we'll check in with the athletes as they edge closer to making their Youth Olympic debuts in Buenos Aires.  Click here for schedules and other information.
