USA Weightlifting to host Womens Coaching Education Weekend

Oct. 05, 2018, 11:39 a.m. (ET)

In an effort to develop more women weightlifting coaches in the United States, USA Weightlifting will conduct its first ever women’s coaching education weekend in early 2019. The weekend will feature Level 1 and 2 coaching courses held back to back over  three days. Women from across the country are invited to the Midwest to develop their coaching skills alongside and led by other women.

Created by the direction of USA Weightlifting’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, USA Weightlifting is hopeful this weekend dedicated to the growth of our female coaches will promote their ranks from a grassroots level to be more reflective of our overall membership.

Currently, our membership is 62% male and 38% female. However, there are far fewer women represented in our elite coaching pool. Only 34 of 339 National, International and Senior International coaches combined are women. Of our 47 Senior International coaches, Ursula Garza Papandrea is the only female. The number of women in our technical official’s pool has grown over the past several years, and we’re dedicated to continuing that trend throughout our coaching ranks.

Hosted and instructed by USA Weightlifting national coach, technical official and Missouri Valley LWC President, Anna Martin, at her gym in Lenexa, KS, the Women’s Coaching Education Weekend will feature our Level 1 and 2 courses held back to back from January 18-20. The Level 1 course will begin Friday morning and end early Saturday afternoon. The Level 2 course will begin Saturday afternoon and end Sunday afternoon.

Though not required, USA Weightlifting is offering both courses for a bundled discounted rate of $799 per person. Participants may elect to register for one course or the other at the standard rate of $499. The courses are only open to female members of USA Weightlifting.
