A deafening silence fell upon the crowd of 300+ in the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center ballroom.
You could hear a pin drop.
They just watched Mattie Rogers (69kg, Orlando, Florida, Florida Elite) clean 134kg (295.4lbs). Now it was time to see if she could drive the bar overhead to break her own American Record.
Seconds later, Rogers exploded upward, successfully completing the jerk, setting a new American Record in the clean & jerk.
It was the climax of an incredible day of weightlifting on the second day of the 2017 Nike National Championships powered by Rogue Fitness.
Rogers’ 134kg clean & jerk, coupled with her 105kg snatch gave her a 139kg total— and a sweep of the gold medals in the women’s 69kg weight category.
She was one of 4 national champions crowned in Chicagoland Saturday.
On the platform to Rogers’ right, Colin Burns (94kg, Mission Viejo, California, Team Juggernaut), won the National Championship with a 369kg total. Burns snatched 170kg and clean & jerked a best 199kg.
Earlier in the day, Jaclyn Long (63kg, Richmond, Virginia, RVA Weightlifting) claimed the National Title with a 201kg total. She snatched 88kg and clean & jerked 113kg.
In the men’s 85kg weight category, James Tatum (Charlotte, NC, East Coast Gold) claimed the National Title with a 335kg total. He snatched 150kg and clean & jerked 185kg.
Sunday’s finale promises to bring excitement as the 2017 National Championships comes to a close. Marissa Klingseis (90kg, St. Joseph, Missouri, Wesley Weightlifters) stunned the weightlifting world by announcing she’s dropped a weight category. Two-time Olympian and 2016 Olympic Bronze Medalist Sarah Robles (+90kg, Desert Hot Springs, California, Team Houston) looks to improve on her gold medal performance at American Open Series I in Reno in March.
On the men’s side, Caine Wilkes (+105kg, Matthews, North Carolina, Little League Weightlifting) looks to defend his National Championship while a new National Champion will be crowned in the 105kg as the 2016 National Champion Wesley Kitts (Livermore, California, California Strength) is not lifting in Chicago.
Lifting gets underway at 8:30 AM Central Sunday, and will be LIVE streamed here.
