The Inaugural USA Weightlifting American Open Series has begun in Reno, Nevada, at the Reno Sparks Convention Center. The series was created to present a new opportunity for lifters of all ages and weight categories to compete at the national level and gain more experience on the platform.

This weekend, the first of a three-part series leading up to the American Open Championships in December, has attracted nearly 600 lifters.

"We are thrilled to kick off this historical weekend here in Reno and look forward to watching new and veteran lifters alike step up to the platform," said Phil AndrewsCEO of USA Weightlifting. "The American Open Series plays a pivotal role in our continual focus on growing and developing our membership base."

Sessions begin at 8:30 a.m. Pacific today with three platforms running continuously throughout the day. Medals will be determined for the 44kg (women), 50kg (men), 53kg (women), 56kg (men) and 58kg (women) classes by this evening.

All sessions are being webcast live on the USA Weightlifting website. The start list and schedule are posted on the official event page. Tickets can be purchased at the door (no cash) at the Reno Sparks Convention Center.
