2017 IWF Youth World Champion Harrison Maurus (77kg, Auburn, WA, Alpha Strength & Conditioning) and coach Kevin Simons will headline a series of educational sessions on Thursday ahead of this weekend's 2017 USA Weightlifting Nike National Youth Championships powered by Rogue Fitness.
Maurus, 17, set a Youth World Record in April with a 192kg clean & jerk lift at the Youth World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. He along with his coach, Kevin Simons and USAW Coaching Education Manager Tamas Feher will discuss training skills and lifting techniques with youth lifters. It's a great opportunity for lifters and coaches alike to see how good technique, coupled with USA Weightlifting-certified coaches, can lead to success on the international stage.
Maurus, Simons and Feher will be holding their free clinic in the Warm-Up area in Exhibit Hall A at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta at 3PM Thursday, June 22.
Maurus is scheduled to lift Sunday at 11:30AM on the Stars platform in his first competition since claiming the Youth World title in April.
Later in the afternoon on Thursday, at 3:45PM, Team Georgia coach and former USAW President CJ Stockel will host "Building a Youth Program," a seminar designed to empower coaches and USAW clubs around the country to build and develop the sport of Weightlifting among youth athletes. As coach of Team Georgia, Stockel has overseen the growth of the sport in the South as well as had a hand in developing some of the nation's top Olympic weightlifting athletes. This seminar is scheduled to happen in the Warm-Up area of the Georgia International Convention Center.
Athletes and coaches who haven't attended a National Championship before are encouraged to attend the "New Athlete & Coach Briefing" at 4:30PM in German Suite 1 & 2. The briefing includes valuable information about how National meets differ from local competitions, and some insight into how USA Weightlifting puts on its 8 National events every year.
All athletes and coaches are encouraged to attend Thursday's briefing by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). There, USADA personnel will share important information about doping control procedures and anti-doping education. The USADA briefing is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at 5:30PM in German Suite 1 & 2.
Please remember, any changes to weight category or entry total must be made at the Verification of Final Entries meeting, from 2:30-3:00PM in German Suite 1 & 2. After the meeting, no changes will be allowed.
