USAW Expands SafeSport, Background Check Requirements

With immediate effect. USA Weightlifting will be implementing further measures to ensure the safety of minor aged participants in the sport of Weightlifting.

In partnership with the U.S. Center for SafeSport, USA Weightlifting will now require that SafeSport education be refreshed every two years by any adults in a position of responsibility in the sport.

USA Weightlifting recently implemented bylaw reforms which states that any person found guilty of sexual abuse within the sport is permanently expelled from the federation. Furthermore, there is now a requirement on members to be under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Center for SafeSport and to report sexual abuse.

USA Weightlifting also publishes a list of USAW-certified coaches on its website who have completed the SafeSport education certification program.

The USA Weightlifting SafeSport Education program, in partnership with the U.S. Center for SafeSport is extended to with immediate effect from the next renewal for:
- Coaches registering for any USA Weightlifting event
- All members of the USA Sports Medicine Society
- Any non-athlete adult attending an international event in support of Team USA
- All USA Weightlifting Coaching Education Instructors
- All Club Presidents, Club Administrators and Club Coaches
- All USA Weightlifting Staff and Contractors
- All USA Weightlifting Board and Committee Members
- All USA Weightlifting Technical Officials, National and Above
- All Athletes on an international team where a minor is present
- All LWC Board Members.

The USA Weightlifting background check program, in partnership with SSCI, is extended to the following:
- Coaches registering for any USA Weightlifting event
- All members of the USA Sports Medicine Society
- Any non-athlete adult attending an international event in support of Team USA
- All USA Weightlifting Coaching Education Instructors
- All Club Presidents, Club Administrators and Club Coaches
- All USA Weightlifting Staff and Contractors
- All USA Weightlifting Board and Committee Members
- All USA Weightlifting Technical Officials, National and Above
- All LWC Board Members

USA Weightlifting already publishes on its website a list of sanctioned members in the areas of SafeSport, Anti-Doping and Ethics.

“We are proud to take these measures, in concert with the newly-opened U.S. Center for SafeSport to continue to ensure that Weightlifting athletes in our increasing youth population have a safe place to practice their chosen sport," USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andres said. "We recognize this may place an additional time burden on some of our members but we ask members to recognize the importance of this issue.”
