Jan. 20, 2017, 4:01 p.m. (ET)

USA Weightlifting Friday released new details about the selection procedures of Team Leaders, Coaches and recipients in the Athlete Stipend System for the 2017-2020 Quadrennial.

Athlete Stipend System

2016 was an incredible year of success for our athletes. Originally budgeted at $430,000, USA Weightlifting increased its Direct Athlete Support (DAS) beyond that figure in 2016. In an effort to keep moving forward and continue improving our performance on the international stage, we are implementing some changes to our Stipend System in 2017. USA Weightlifting set a budget of $480,000 for athlete stipends in 2017. The purpose of the Stipend System is to provide Direct Athlete Support (DAS) payments to athlete for the specific purpose of supporting their training and competition expenses as an elite athlete. This supports USA Weightlifting’s goal to support the training of international level athletes who are likely to be part of Team USA. By making this significant monetary commitment, USA Weightlifting athletes will be among the most financially supported athletes anywhere in the Olympic Movement.

We are implementing an updated Coach Selection policy for the 2017-2020 Quadrennial. The purpose of the policy is to provide a group of coaches to a team to allow them to achieve the maximum team placement in competition and individual medal chances, particularly in competitions where Team USA is qualifying for a Games event.

Team Leaders

Team Leaders play a crucial role in the success of athletes representing Team USA. We have developed an updated the process of identifying the right people who can provide skilled support to the athletes and coaches on the team. The role of the Team Leader is to remove obstacles that could prevent athletes from the performance they need to execute.
