“It was a good day,” Jourdan Delacruz said, with 3 new Gold Medals hanging around her neck.
When she took the platform Friday at the Nike National Junior Championships powered by Rogue Fitness, breaking her own Junior American Records weren’t at the top of mind.
“Honestly, I wasn’t really thinking about it much, I was just going to max out,” Delacruz told USA Weightlifting moments after her Victory Ceremony in Kansas City, Missouri.
Delacruz, 18, owns all of the American Junior Records in the women’s 53kg category. She hit her second snatch of 77kg. She just missed her 3rd attempt at 80kg, which would have broken her record of 79kg set last September at the National University & Under 25 Championships in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Here at the Crown Center Exhibit Hall, Delacruz put on a clinic in the clean & jerk and was crowned American Junior Champion.
She opened the clean & jerk with a 98kg lift, 3kg more than her American Junior Record from New Orleans. She followed up with a 101kg lift. She nearly made her 3rd and final attempt at 103kg. With a total of 178kg, Delacruz broke her own American Junior Record in the total by 4kg.
“If you clean this, you better jerk that,” Delacruz said with a laugh when asked about her third clean & jerk attempt. “I felt really solid in the clean and jerk this training cycle. So I’m really proud with how that went.”
The former U.S. Olympic Training Center athlete now trains in Texas. She’s preparing for what should be a very busy year representing Team USA.
“I’m getting ready for Junior Pan-Ams in Ecuador,” Delacruz said. “I plan on competing at the USA Weightlifting National Championships in Chicago this June.”
