American Open Series Finals to Return to Midwest

Aug. 30, 2017, 3:43 p.m. (ET)

The 2018 Nike American Open Finals, powered by Rogue Fitness, will head to the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin December 6-9, 2018.

The American Open Finals is just part of a magical weekend of lifting in Milwaukee. USA Powerlifting’s American Open is expected to be held at facilities adjacent to the Wisconsin Center.

“We are delighted to have an American Open in the Midwest for the first time since 2010,” USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews said. “Milwaukee provides a central location for our competitors and the Wisconsin Center provides a first-rate facility for one of our most high profile events of the year.”

The culmination of the 4-part American Open Series, the American Open Finals will crown the American Open Series Champions. The event is one of two premier Senior Events, and marks the beginning of the qualification process for international championships in the 2019 calendar year.

Hotel accommodation will be provided across the Skybridge in the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee with overflow accommodations provided at the Hilton Milwaukee. Sauna and check scale facilities will also be at the Hyatt Regency to ensure that competitors can find all they need under one roof.

“Recently, I browsed through Bruce Klemens’ photos from the 1983 Women’s National Championships-- the last--and only major championships held in Milwaukee. Beyond reflecting on how our sport has evolved in the years since, it was inspiring to see the allure of what draws us to this sport stay constant. The suspense of approaching the bar. Grit and grace in execution. Elation on the podium. We couldn’t be more excited to showcase a new chapter in the history books here in 2018,” said Murph DeVane of Milwaukee Barbell.

Registration will open once the IWF establishes new weight categories. That's expected by July.
