Board of Directors Election Results

As of November 4, 2016 – USA Weightlifting through the USA Weightlifting Nominating & Governance Committee has completed the election process for the USA Weightlifting Board of Directors (“Board”), inclusive of our USOC Athlete Advisory Council representative per the Organization’s bylaws. The results are as follows:


Emmy Vargas (Burbank, CA)
 leaves both the USA Weightlifting Board and USOC Athlete Advisory Council after eight years of service to each organization. Ms. Vargas’ exemplary service includes appointment to several working groups and committees across both organizations and she will have a continued role with the Board as our delegate to the Pan American Weightlifting Federation Congress.  Emmy is a former World Championships and Pan American Games team competitor, and now serves the sport as both a Coach and a National Referee. 

Ari Sherwin (Cleveland, OH)
 leaves the USA Weightlifting Board after one full-term as an Independent Director.  Professionally a patent attorney employed with the Sherwin-Williams Paint Company, Mr. Sherwin’s background as both a legal professional and an anti-doping educator assisted the Board for four years. 

Terry Grow (North Olmstead, OH) leaves the USA Weightlifting Board after one full-term as Grassroots Director.  A U.S. Army military veteran, Mr. Grow currently serves and will continue to serve as the Chair of the USA Weightlifting Technical Committee. Mr. Grow is an International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Category 1 referee, and coach of the West Park YMCA.  Mr. Grow will continue to actively contribute to the sport as one of our most senior technical officials and as coach of his club in the Cleveland, OH area.




Travis Cooper (Wakefield, RI):

Travis Cooper is elected to the USA Weightlifting Board and the USOC Athlete Advisory Council for the first time.  In the 2012-2016 Olympic Quad, Cooper was the most active male athlete in major IWF Events. Cooper is a 3-time National Champion (2013, 2015 & 2016), 2-time Pan American medalist (2013, 2014), World University Championship medalist (2010), National Junior Champion (2008) and National Youth Champion (2005). Cooper also serves as Athlete Representative on the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame Committee and served as Athlete Representative on the USA Weightlifting 2016 Search Committee for CEO.  Cooper is also a National level coach. Cooper departs soon for the International University Sport Federation (FISU) World University Championship, where he will represent the USA in the 85kg category. 


Louis Lauria (Atlanta, GA):
Louis “Lou” Lauria is appointed by the USA Weightlifting Nominating & Governance Committee as Independent Director on the USA Weightlifting Board of Directors. Mr. Lauria has a more than 20 year-career in international Olympic Sport, having worked for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games Organizing Committee, 2000 Sydney Olympic & Paralympic Games Organizing Committee, 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic & Paralympic Organizing Committee, International Paralympic Committee (IPC), International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) in various leadership and operational roles. Mr. Lauria has also worked in consulting roles with the successful hosting bids for the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) 2018 World Cup in Russia, PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games and in consulting roles with organizations such as the Sochi 2014 Olympic & Paralympic Games, FIAS (Federation International Athletic Sambo), FISU and Dow Chemical. 


 J. Butch Curry (San Francisco, CA): 
Mr. Curry was re-elected for a second term as At-Large Director. Curry is a 1980 Olympian in the sport and an 8-time international team member, and until October of 2016 served as President of the Pacific Weightlifting Association for some 19 terms. Mr. Curry is a current IWF Category 2 Referee, having attained his National qualification in 1979. Curry is also a former Athlete Representative from 1992-1993 on the Board of Directors, and as a member of the USOC Board of Directors and USOC Athlete Advisory Council from 1989-1993.  More recently, Mr. Curry has been honored by the annual Butch Curry Classic in the North California area.


Jenny Schumacher (Pleasant Grove, UT):
The head coach of Proven Strength Weightlifting in Utah, with athletes from 10 to 46 years of age – Ms. Schumacher has a professional background as a professional nurse. Ms. Schumacher is an ever present volunteer at National competitions. With her professional medical background, Schumacher values Weightlifting as a method for improving health and sports performance and as a competitive sport. Schumacher becomes the first person from Utah to occupy a position on the USA Weightlifting Board of Directors.                                                                                           


Ursula Garza Papandrea (Pflugerville, TX): 
Ms. Garza Papandrea was elected for a third and final term as Technical Director. As a Chair of the Board, Ms. Garza Papandrea is eligible for one further term. Ms. Garza Papandrea is a Senior International Coach as well as appearing in 4 IWF World Championship events as an athlete. Garza Papandrea is Head Coach of a previous National Team Champion club, Texas Barbell. She currently serves as the USA Weightlifting voting delegate to the IWF.
