COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Newly crowned World Champion CJ Cummings is enjoying a lot of buzz after winning the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia.

After winning the Men’s 69kg title Monday, Cummings told USA Weightlifting he feels like the weight of the world has been lifted off his shoulders and he turns his attention to training for the youth world championships.

Cummings, 16, also broke three Youth World Records in Tbilisi. He first broke the clean & jerk record with a 175kg lift and then broke it again with a successful 180kg lift.  He also broke the record for total weight at 317kg.

“I am excited and happy. I could both win and break the record,” Cummings told the IWF when asked about breaking the clean & jerk record with a 180kg lift. “This is a fantastic feeling,” Cummings said.

Breaking the world record was on his mind when arriving at Junior Worlds.

“I have lifted this weight already and I am happy I could repeat it once again,” Cummings said.

Cummings' coach, Ray Jones, was elated for his young athlete.

"It was such a sense of pride and accomplishment to know my young lifter will live the rest of his life as a world champion," Jones said.

Weightlifting is a difficult sport to master. It’s even harder to be successful on an international stage.  But Cummings makes it look easy.

“I didn’t train specially for this tournament. I usually worked out following the long term program with my coach and it appeared enough for achieving this result,” Cummings said.

He looks to the future and fulfilling his dreams of Olympic glory.

“I am planning to compete on Olympic Games and represent my country with success. I also hope I will be able to break more world records in future,” Cummings said.

For now, he will return home to Beaufort, South Carolina.

“I think my (teammates) will meet me as a hero,” Cummings told the IWF.

Cummings’ successes are also being recognized on Twitter.
