Athlete Advisory Council Elections

JULY 15, 2016.

Board of Directors Elections

In accordance with the Bylaws (the “Bylaws”) of USA Weightlifting, Inc. (“USAW”), elections for the following Board of Directors roles with terms expiring December 31, 2016, are being held:

  •    At Large Director (Bylaw Section 6.6(b)(v))
  •    Technical Director (Bylaw Section 6.6(b)(ii))
  •    Grassroots Director (Bylaw Section 6.6(b)(iii))
  •    USAW Representative to the USOC Athletes’ Advisory Council. (Bylaw Sections 6.6(b)(i) and 11.3)

The Nominating & Governance Committee (the “NGC”) and USAW are now actively seeking nominations through September 15, 2016, for the above positions.  Please review the above-referenced sections of the Bylaws for the qualifications for each of the director positions to determine eligibility.  As set forth in Section 6.6(b)(i) of the Bylaws, the USAW Representative to the USOC Athletes’ Advisory Council is automatically a member of the USAW Board of Directors.   As such, please review Section 11.3 of the Bylaws to determine eligibility for that position.  A summary of the qualifications is set forth below.

In addition, the NGC will be conducting a search for and selecting an Independent Director to the USAW Board of Directors, as required in Sections 6.6(b)(iv) and 6.7 of the Bylaws.

All members should review the Bylaws and associated governance documentation at:

for qualification requirements and detailed information in relation to the nomination process.

Athletes’ Advisory Council Elections

As set forth in Section 10 of the Bylaws, USAW will also elect a seven-member USAW Athletes’ Advisory Council (the “AAC”). Please note that this is completely separate from the USAW Board of Directors positions set forth above and is also separate from the USOC Athletes’ Advisory Counsel, although the USAW Representative to the USOC Athletes’ Advisory Council is automatically a member of the AAC, as is the alternate. There are five positions available on the AAC.  Please review Sections 10.2 and 10.3 of the Bylaws regarding eligibility and the election procedures for the AAC, as those are distinct from the requirements set forth in Section 11.3.

As set forth in Section 10.3 of the Bylaws, eligible members are those who are 18 years of age and have competed in the Olympic Games, World Championship, or major international competition in the past 10 years, or who finished in the top half of the National Championships in 2015 or 2016.  Qualified candidates for the AAC should obtain at least 10 recommendations from other eligible members.
