USA Weightlifting to Implement 6-month RTP Rule

July 12, 2016, 12:44 p.m. (ET)

In a strong statement of commitment to clean sport, USA Weightlifting is implementing a 6-month United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) Registered Testing Pool (RTP) period ahead of any international competition.

For international competitions in 2017 and beyond, U.S. athletes will be required to be in the pool or, formally request in writing to be in the RTP, a minimum of 6 months ahead of the corresponding international competition.

Athletes not in the pool currently, can make such a request in writing to USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews at any time. Athletes can view the current RTP criteria here.

From January 1, 2017, USA Weightlifting and USADA will also begin to select athletes based on local totals that would qualify them for any listed requirement category.

For example, for a competition occurring in April 2017, the athlete must be in the pool (or have requested to be so) by October 2016.

This commitment applies to all age groups and all international competitions from January 1, 2017, onward.

If there are any questions on this policy, its implementation or implications, athletes can reach out to USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews with any questions.
