Weightlifting Veteran Named Sport Manager for Tokyo 2020

With final preparations underway for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, the sport of Weightlifting is already focusing on the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. 

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced this week Reiko Kato Chinen was appointed as weightlifting Sport Manager for Tokyo 2020. 

"Working also in the bidding process for Tokyo, it was my dream to bring the Olympic Games to my country to develop the sport further," Chinen told the IWF. 

With more than 30 years involvement in the sport, Chinen will oversee the organization for weightlifting events for the Tokyo Games. 

"Now having full responsibility to deliver unforgettable Games, I will aim to bring success to the Japan Weightlifting Association, IWF and weightlifting," Chinen said. 

Chinen served as an International Technical Official for 5 Olympic Games. She's also a member of the IWF Technical Committee, the Asian Weightlifting Federation and the Japan Weightlifting Association Executive Board. 

"We look forward to a spirited and clean competition in Tokyo," USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews said. "Mrs. Chinen has served our sport tireless for some time in her various roles with the IWF, and in my personal experience of working alongside her, I cannot think of a better individual to organize the competition in her hometown of Tokyo."
