Athletes Heading to Pennsylvania for National Junior Championships and Senior Trials

Athletes heading to Pennsylvania for 2016 National Junior Championships and Senior Trials

The annual National Junior Championships and Senior Trials are taking place this weekend at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Valley Forge, Pa. 350 athletes are registered for the National Junior Championships, with an additional 30 athletes ready to compete in the Senior Trials.

The National Junior Championships will determine the 2016 Junior Pan American Championships team and is qualifying event for the 2016 Junior World Championships. The Senior Trials is an official qualifier for the Pan American Championships and Olympic Games.

Opening activities occur throughout Thursday, February 18, at the Expo Center and several other venues in the area. Competition opens on Friday morning, February 19, and will run through Sunday, February 21. The Senior Trials will close the weekend on Sunday afternoon.

USA Weightlifting is hosting the events in partnership with Garage Strength (Reading, Pa.). Owner Dane Miller has grown Garage Strength into the premier Olympic weightlifting and performance sports center in the area. Six of his athletes will compete this weekend, including siblings Hayley Reichardt (48kg) and Tanner Reichardt (77kg), who have both competed internationally for Team USA.

Danielle Hudes (Medford, N.J.) is another local athlete to watch. Hudes is a 2015 American Open Champion for the 69kg weight class and will compete in the Senior Trials.

CJ Cummings (Beaufort, S.C.) will compete in the 69 kg weight class. Cummings has received notable attention over the past year with numerous record-breaking performances at the national level. He was the youngest athlete in any weight class at the 2015 World Championships this past November. His brother, Omar Cummings (Beaufort, S.C.), will join him in Philadelphia and is lifting in the 77 kg division.

Joining Cummings from the 2015 World Championships team is Kendrick Farris (Shreveport, La.) Farris will lift in the 94kg weight class in the Senior Trials competition.

Several of USA Weightlifting’s resident athletes at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center are heading east for the weekend. Morghan King (Seattle, Wa.) and Colin Burns (Monroe, Wis.) will compete in the Senior Trials in the 48kg and 94kg weight classes, respectively. Jourdan Delacruz (Wylie, Texas), Deirdre Lenzsch (Somers Point, N.J.) and Jessie Bradley (Provo, Utah) are lifting in the National Junior Championships.

Local businesses have opened their doors to USA Weightlifting athletes for the weekend. An offsite training facility is accessible at Bridgeport Barbell Club and Crossfit of King of Prussia, and YMCA Phoenixville has made its sauna available for use. The Valley Forge Sports Commission is providing transportation between the airport, select hotels, and the competition venue.
